Pre-rolls are the fastest growing category in cannabis and the fastest growing segment of the pre-roll market is infused pre-rolls, becoming the top-selling segment in 2023 and never looking back.
And the most striking style of infused joint – and one of the most popular – is the kief-coated pre-roll, as seen among top producers like Jeeter and STIIIZY.
For companies looking to produce a large number of kief-coated pre-rolls as quickly as possible, the KiefLabs KL120 Infused Joint Coating Machine is a must-have pre-roll machine, guaranteed to speed up your infusion process with the ability to coat up to 7,000 pre-rolls per hour in distillate or adhesive.
The Market for Infused Pre-Rolls
In 2025, infused pre-rolls accounted for about $1.7 billion in sales, a staggering 47% of the entire $3.6 billion pre-roll market.
The segment has seen impressive, sustained growth for more than five years, up an astonishing 257% since 2021’s revenue total of $475.7 million, when infused pre-rolls only accounted for 28% of sales.
Looking at the number of units sold is just as impressive a story. In 2025, consumers bought 144.6 million infused pre-roll products, up from 33 million in 2021. That’s a staggering 338% increase in just 5 years.
With consumers consistently telling us the two main reasons they choose a pre-roll product are potency and price point, it’s easy to see why infused pre-rolls, which deliver the biggest bang for the buck due to the combination of concentrate and flower, continue to grow in popularity.
And while there are dozens of different ways to combine the ingredients to make an infused pre-roll, few have the eye-catching power of coating the outside with kief. Not only does it boost your potency in a very visible and marketable way, it’s also a fairly smart move from a production standpoint, because every producer always has kief from their processing.
But coating your pre-rolls by hand can be a long, labor-intensive process. So how do you coat a pre-roll in kief the fast way? And what is the easiest way to coat a pre-roll kief?
What is the KL120 Infused Joint Coating Machine?
For manufacturers looking to create these striking and dramatic kief coated pre-rolls, the KiefLabs KL120 Automated Joint Coating Machine is the right pre-roll machine for the job, designed to increase throughput while cutting down on employee hours and frustration.
Built to coat the outside of packed and closed pre-rolls with a glue or distillate, the KL120 has the capability to coat thousands of pre-rolls per hour with minimal labor. It’s fully controllable and works quickly to coat any size pre-roll up to 120mm in length or up to 20mm in diameter in less than 3 seconds.
Designed specifically for making infused pre-rolls, the KL120 contains two stainless steel roller housings and reservoirs, each with a pair of rollers allowing either side of the machine to coat two pre-rolls at a time with a precision and repeatability that is difficult for employees to match. The roller speed can be set to either “low,” for thicker adhesives and oils, or “high” for use with thinner oils and glues.
Each reservoir also has its own temperature control system showing the current temp and the goal temp, so manufacturers can perfectly dial in their procedures every time.
What Type of Adhesive Works Best with the KL120 Kief Coating Machine?
We have found the KL120 works best with Acacia, purchased in powder form and mixed with water to preference, though we recommend a mix of about 17-20% Acacia.
And be warned: many pre-made glues contain a binding agent to keep them stable, but those agents, which can thicken the glue, causing it to flow to one side and making it difficult to coat pre-rolls evenly.
Once you have made your mix, simply fill each reservoir with the adhesive of your choice, set the temperature and wait for it to heat up. For glue, we recommend a temperature around 30 degrees Celsius or 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which though warm is still safe to the touch.
The KL120 can also be used with distillate, though it should be pre-heated before being put in the reservoir. When using distillate, your reservoir should be pre-heated to about 80-100 degrees Celsius, which is between 175 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit, requiring a little more care so your employees do not accidentally touch the metal.
Producers should also expect a decrease in production of around 20-30% versus acacia, a distillate loss of about 3%, and increased cleaning time after use.
How Do You Use the KL120 Joint Coating Machine?
The KL120 Joint Coating Machine is remarkably intuitive and easy to use and is designed to be used by up to two employees at a time.
After pre-heating the reservoirs and letting your adhesive come up to temperature, employees simply place filled and closed pre-rolls – up to 120mm in length or 20mm in diameter – on the roller with the crutch resting on one of the adjustable crutch holders and let it rotate about three times, or about 2 seconds, coating the outside with your adhesive.
Each reservoir can coat 2 pre-rolls at once for a full-use, hour-long total of about 7,000 coated pre-rolls.
Once completed, immediately dust the coated pre-roll directly with your kief to finish the process.
Note: we have found the KL120 works best with pre-rolls closed with a Dutch crown finish or a clipped twist. A twisted top tends to get caught on the rollers, preventing it from turning and being coated evenly by your adhesive.
How Do You Clean the KL120 Joint Coating Machine?
One key to keeping the KL120 Joint Coatiung Machine running at peak efficiency is to keep to a regular maintenance schedule.
At the end of each workday, remove the reservoirs and dispose of any remaining adhesive. Next, clean the two reservoirs using warm, soapy water. Make sure both rollers move freely and all visible adhesive is removed.
Dry using a lint-free towel.
Remember, these reservoirs are hand-clean only, so do not put them in a dishwasher or any other appliance. It is also not recommended to use compressed air, as it can blow water onto the electronics.
Once a week, it is recommended to clean the baths using an ultrasonic cleaner filled with a minimum of 70% isopropyl alcohol and then fully dry before replacing.
