The Indica Pre-Roll Report
Posted by Custom Cones USA on May 11th 2026
You've heard the phrase "Always the bridesmaid, never the bride," right?
Well in the pre-roll world that phrase applies almost perfectly to the single strain indica pre-roll, the no. 3 pre-roll segment in the country.
Unlike the Infused segment, which tops the revenue charts, or the single strain hybrid segment that leads in unit sales, the indica pre-roll never gets its day in the center of the photo, but instead clearly sits in third in both metrics.
But the indica pre-roll is still a very important segment when it comes to developing and scaling a successful pre-roll brand. So let's take a deep dive into the data for the indica pre-roll and see how they are selling and who is buying them.
Indica Pre-Rolls by the Numbers
According to cannabis analytics firm Headset, which collects point-of-sale data from cannabis retailers in 15 state markets, the indica single strain segment was the No. 3 pre-roll segment in both revenue and units sold.
Indica pre-rolls earned $238.1 million in 2025 on sales of about 32 million units with an average unit price of $7.46. That amounts to about 6.7% of total pre-roll revenues, just ahead of the sativa pre-roll's $227 million in revenue and 6.4% market share.
That equates to a relatively minor 2.2% year-over-year growth in revenue, but a more impressive 14.4% growth in unit sales, third behind the infused and CBD segments. Looking at the 5-year growth of the segment, indica pre-roll revenue have jumped 63% since 2020, fourth in the category, and unit sales have increased 92% over the same time frame (third).
However, the indica segment has the lowest average price point in the pre-roll category. At just $7.22 per unit, indica pre-rolls are priced nearly 40% below infused pre-rolls and even $0.30 per unit lower than hybrids.
How Are Indica Pre-Rolls Sold?
When it comes to indica pre-rolls, the 1-gram size dominates, generating $116 million in revenue, or 49% of the segment, selling 25 million units, about 78% of all indica pre-roll units sold, with an average price of $4.64 per unit.
That is followed by the 3.5-gram package size at 1 million units with an average unit cost of $30.10 for $30.2 million in revenue, and the 2.5-gram package at 854,000 units at an average cost of $22.21 for a total revenue of $19 million.
Indica Pre-Roll Singles Vs Indica Pre-Roll Multi-Packs
Breaking down the package size by weight gives us a glimpse into the purchasing habits of indica fans, but let's break it down even further and look at singles vs multi-pack sales.
The majority of indica purchases – about 55% - are multi-pack purchases, which is not a surprise considering multi-packs in 2025 accounted for 48.5% of all pre-roll products including 90 of the top 100 best-selling products.
Multi-packs accounted for $130.9 million of the segment's revenue compared to $106.5 million for single-serve indica pre-rolls. This is due to multi-packs having an average price of $17.29 compared to just $4.39 for a single indica pre-roll.
However, not surprisingly, when we look at units sold, those numbers flip, with indica singles accounting for more than 76% of all indica units sold, selling 24.3 million units, compared to just 7.6 million multipacks.
But exactly what type of indica multi-packs are selling? Packs with half-gram 84mm pre-rolls, mainly.
The top format in both revenue and units is the 1-gram 2-pack, made up of two 84mm half-gram pre-rolled cones, most likely packed into a single doob tube. Despite having the lowest average unit price at $7.88, the 1-gram 2-pack "only" sold 2.4 million units for a total of $19.2 million in revenue.
The 2.5-gram 5-pack, featuring five 84mm half-gram pre-rolled cones comes in second with $18.8 million in revenue on sales of about 845,000 units with an average price of $22.21.
The 3.5-gram 7-pack, also containing 84mm pre-rolled cones, comes in third at $13.2 million in sales and 437,000 units sold at an average price of $30.08.
With the fourth spot, we break away from half-gram multi-packs at 3.5-grams with the10-pack of 70mm mini "dogwalker" pre-rolls, which sold 339,000 units at $31.44 for a total of about $10.7 million revenue.
But with the fifth spot we are back to half-grammers with the 5-gram 10-pack generating about $7 million on sales of 407,000 units priced at an average of $17.30.
Who Buys Indica Pre-Rolls?
Breaking down the sales by generation, the indica segment follows the standard pattern for pre-rolls: Millennials dominate.
Millennials account for 44.5% of all indica pre-rolls purchased, racking up $104.7 million in sales of 13.7 million units.
Generation X follows at 24% of indica sales, with Gen Z and Baby Boomers in fourth and fifth.
However, according to the analysis, indica pre-rolls appeal across all generations. They are a universal product without a strong generational skew according to Headset.
Final Thoughts on Indica Pre-Rolls
While third in every sales metric, the indica pre-roll is an important part of any pre-roll line and a must-have for producers looking to reach their full revenue potential.
In 2025, there were 1,740 in the states tracked that offered indica pre-roll products, for a total of 10,728 distinct SKUs in the segment. That ranks a distant third among the segments for both brands in the segment and distinct SKUs, as well as for SKUs per brand.
And though the 1-gram, single-serving size still top individual sales charts, multi-packs featuring 84mm half-gram pre-rolls are a must.
So while the indica segment does not generate revenue like the infused segment or move units like the hybrid, it still has a dedicated audience. And at 49.1% it has a better margin than both the infused (42.8%) and hybrid (48.9%) segments it trails.
If you're considering starting or expanding your pre-roll line, make sure you include the indica pre-roll as part of your brand's offerings, and in particular consider using branded or designer cones that indicate on the filter that this is an indica pre-roll being passed around.
