Pre-Roll Recall in California

Pre-Roll Recall in California

Posted by Custom Cones USA on Apr 5th 2024

California officials on March 20 issued a mandatory recall of Almora 14 Half Gram Pre-Rolls, GMO Pop, due to the presence of Aspergillus.

The product was pulled from 98 dispensaries, where it had been sold since late 2023.

Aspergillus is a dangerous mold that when ingested can suppress the immune system and cause liver damage. It is something that all cannabis products in every legal market are tested for to help keep consumers safe.

The March 20 recall of a batch of pre-roll products in California is a good reminder that products in the Golden State are tested in their final form, so it’s important to make sure the pre-rolled cones you pack your flower into are as clean and well tested as the flower itself.

Though it is unknown whether the paper or the flower caused this batch of pre-rolls to be recalled, there was not a similar recall on flower at the same time.

Because the paper used to create pre-rolls can trip an actionable level and require a batch to be destroyed or recalled, it’s important to make sure your pre-roll supplier is also focused on safety.

"The recent recall of Almora’s pre-rolls serves as a crucial reminder to processors: thorough testing of every material input in pre-rolled products, both individually and collectively, is paramount,” says Custom Cones USA Compliance Manager André Bayard. “It is really the only method to guarantee the cleanliness and safety of pre-roll offerings, shielding consumers from potentially harmful contaminants."

At both Custom Cones USA and DaySavers, all of our pre-rolled cones are sourced from the finest paper mills in Europe and are tested above and beyond the highest standards in the industry (even more than California) for not only microbials, but for heavy metals and pesticides as well, so you can be confident that if your flower passes your state-mandated safety tests, your final pre-rolls products will as well.

So whether you choose the ultra-fine refined white rolling paper, the natural brown smoking cones, the 100% organic hemp pre-rolled cones or any of our hemp wrap or hybrid hemp wrap blunt tubes, you’ll never have to worry about seeing your brand’s name on a mandatory recall announcement.

It’s also the reason you won’t find palm wrap blunt tubes or rose petal blunt wraps on the Custom Cones USA website. It's notoriously difficult to consistently source clean products to create those cones and because of that, we simply choose not to stock them, instead offering alternatives we can ensure are clean and won’t lead to your company’s name being splashed across headlines throughout the industry.

Always ask your pre-roll supplier to see the Certificates of Analysis (COA) on their products to ensure customer safety, or at least ask for samples that you can fill and send to a lab before committing an entire batch of flower to untested rolling paper or pre-rolled cones.

"At Custom Cones USA, our commitment is to deliver pre-roll products devoid of contaminants. We meticulously vet and lab-test our materials before manufacturing our pre-rolls, ensuring their quality and purity," says Bayard. "Additionally, we subject the final products to rigorous testing, leaving no room for compromise."
