Rhode Island: Packaging Regulations

While marijuana is decriminalized in Rhode Island, it isn’t for sale for recreational use. However, it is available to those who possess a medical card. The purpose of this post is to bring clarification to those who are doing business in Rhode Island and have questions regarding the rules for marijuana packaging and labeling.

Remember that when doing business within the cannabis industry to always follow-up with your states official rules and regulations. It should be noted that this post does not pose as a substitute of Rhode Island's marijuana laws which can be found here.

General Requirements

Similar to other states who do not have recreational marijuana legalized, Rhode Island follows a similar set of guidelines when it comes to the packaging of their medical marijuana products. Rhode Island requires that all incoming cannabis products must meet these requirements before entering the retail space. 

In regard to the specific container that houses the cannabis product, the following guidelines must be met:

• Color of the tubes should be neutral and solid in color (pictured to the left is one of our pre-roll tubes that meets this requirement
• The product should be fully enclosed
• The packaging should protect the product from external chemicals
• The packaging material should be made to ensure that any chemicals do not leach into the product
• Child resistant
• Resealable to maintain child-resistance

Label Requirements

Rhode Island also has various rules when it comes to the labeling of your product (think of the information that gets stuck on the package). They are as follows:

• A single serving cannot be more that 10mgs of THC
• Each single serving should be placed in their own child-resistant container
• Font should be no smaller than 6pt in standard type (Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial etc.)
• The business and license number of those who both produced and are selling the product
• The unique identifier that has been generated by the Medical Marijuana Program Tracking System
• The total THC and/or CBD content in the product
• Universal Warning Symbol that has been DBR (Dept. Business Regulation) approved
• Net weight of the product
• Contact number for poison control

Required Warnings

The State of Rhode Island also requires the following warnings to be printed on the packaging (either the label or directly on the package):

1. Warning: For Medical use ONLY. This product contains marijuana. Store in a securely locked cabinet away from children.”

2. Warning: It is unlawful to transport this product outside of Rhode Island.

3. Warning: For medical use by a registered patient only. Not for resale.

4. Warning: Smoking and Vaping is hazardous to your health.
