WHAT ARE PALM LEAF BLUNTS?

They often burn slower than rolling papers and add a robust, earthy flavor to the smoke.

But let’s start with what they are not. Believe it or not, palm leaf blunts and wraps are not actually palm leaves. They are leaves, but not from the palm tree.

There are two main types of leaf used for blunt wraps: cordia and tendu.

The Cordia leaf has a dark, green color and grows across southeast Asia and the South Pacific Islands. The high amount of chlorophyll not only gives the leaves their distinctive hue, but also results in an earthy taste being added to the smoking experience. Cordia palm wraps and blunts are often greener, have a smoother appearance and, because of the additional chlorophyll, tend to be more brittle and are prone to cracking.

Tendu leaves, on the other hand come from a tree found widely across central India. It is commonly used for thin, hand-rolled tobacco cigarettes. Since the tendu leaf is flexible, it does not crack as easily when dry, and the soft texture makes it an excellent leaf to use for rolling. It is usually grayer in color, has a slightly fuzzy texture and has a milder taste because of the cure used to remove chlorophyll.

The biggest difference between the tendu leaf and the cordia leaf is the way that they are cured and prepared for use. The Tendu leaf is toasted, removing chlorophyll and other plant components whereas the cordia leaf is not.

WHY NOT KING PALM WRAPS OR KING PALM BLUNTS?

Since Palm Leaf Blunts, Palm Leaf wraps and Corn Husk filters found in many King Palm Cones are made from natural leaves and materials, they can often contain unsafe levels of heavy metals, pesticides and/or mold. The heavy metals come from the soil these palm style leaves grow in and the pesticides are sprayed directly on these crops or drift from nearly farms.

Because there are no requirements for testing rolling paper and filter products before they get to the consumer, we take it upon ourselves to test everything through a third-party lab and we did not feel comfortable offering a product that was not safe for consumers or reliable for businesses to stake their reputation on.

In 2022, King Palm themselves ran into a similar problem when the Colorado Medical Enforcement Division issued a recall for several King Palm products, including infused King Palm Blunts, which were found to contain unsafe mold and yeast levels. That came on the heels of a 2021 report from California-based SC Labs that found several rolling paper and palm wrap brands failing testing for pesticides, including several King Palm wraps, including King Palm flavor wraps.

In addition, the corn husk filters found in many palm leaf blunt products, including King Palm Cones and King Palm Blunts are still an unsafe option, as they can often contain microbials, which will make you fail testing and could make you and your customers seriously ill. Since the cornhusk material is natural and contains moisture, once rolled up in a tight filter, this creates a breeding ground for mold and other harmful microbials.

Both cordia and tendu leaves can fall victim to contamination issues. However, the toasting and curing process used on tendu leaves can help eliminate pesticides that have accumulated on the leaves. This makes it easier for tendu leaf wraps to pass strict testing for recreational cannabis markets, but it will not affect issues related to heavy metals.

Obviously, not all palm wraps, palm blunts or palm cones will cause a pre-roll to fail testing, but it is not a risk we were willing to take with our reputation, or yours.
