Creating a pre-roll brand can be a daunting process. There are numerous elements to take into consideration when developing a commercially successful brand. From paper types to shipping types, all elements are vital for success. Understanding the process of obtaining the materials is important for buyers, and we're here to help. Check out our the following tips to ensure that you're getting the best deal possible.

4 Tips For Buying Custom Pre-Roll Cones

  1. Paper Type & Quality
  2. Pre-Rolled Cone Length
  3. Minimum Order Quantities
  4. Lead Times
  5. Air-Freight vs. Ocean-Freight

Paper Quality & Type

First and foremost, a pre-rolled cone has to be judged by its smoking quality. Your custom branded cone can look as beautiful as your trichome-rich buds, but if the paper tastes harsh good luck getting the customer to buy again. Now they will associate the harsh flavor of the paper with your pre-roll! When selecting papers, look for paper with a low GSM rating, typically in the mid-teens, but less than 15GSM. Ultra-thin rolling papers may weigh only 14 grams for a whole square meter. GSM stands for grams-per-square-meter, which translates to how heavy the paper is per square meter.  Why does this matter? Because the heavier the paper, the more paper the customer smokes and the harsher it is. However, if your paper is too thin, you get a paper which creates a thin smoke and can easily canoe or break, leaving customers unsatisfied. We recommend and use 14 GSM paper for all our pre-rolled cones, as it's a great balance between clean flavor and creating a full smoke.

Of course, the type of paper you use plays an impact on the smoking experience as well. There are three main types of papers; flax papers, also known as wood pulp, hemp papers, and rice papers. Flax paper is your traditional paper which almost all major brands use. The classic RAW rolling papers are made from an unbleached flax pulp which creates a translucent brown paper, while brands like OCB use a bleached flax pulp which results in a translucent white rolling paper. Many reviewers say that the bleached flax papers actually produce a better tasting paper; however, some consumers prefer the brown paper because of its' natural and unprocessed look. Hemp papers are typically more cream-colored, and are seen as a more sustainable paper type by consumers. Many brands, such as ourselves and RAW, have started offering these papers as the popularity has skyrocketed. Rice papers are translucent white and nearly ash-less on their own and so they produce a very clean smoke. Each type of paper has its pros and cons which are nicely summarized in the chart below.

We offer all three types of papers, even 100% certified organic hemp pre-rolled cones; something which other brands charge a premium for. Why? Because they produce their cones in a country which strictly prohibits hemp products, even hemp paper. Custom Cones USA manufactures in a hemp friendly factory and we are proud to produce a 100% hemp paper pre-roll cone along with the only company to sell a hemp wrap blunt cone made out of hemp for pre-roll production.

Pre-Roll Cone Length Customization

Now that you have the type of paper and the desired GSM rating for your pre-roll cone, you need to decide what length of paper you want to use. Common cone sizes are 109 mm (king-size) for joints up to 1.3 grams and 84 mm for joints up to 0.6 grams. Custom Cones USA offers cones in sizes from as small as 54mm all the way up to 280mm. This allows you the flexibility to create any size you would need from small cones for multi-packs, to giant pre-rolled cones for special occasions and limited edition products.

Minimum Order Quantities

Minimum order quantities, or MOQs, are important to understand as well. Due to internal costs, most businesses in the B2B sector have MOQs for their custom products. These are the lowest quantity of units that you are able to purchase, and are typically the highest price points. As you increase your quantity, the price-per-unit will go down due to production processes and other financial restrictions. Custom Cones USA has no MOQs on our  unbranded pre-rolled cones, and the lowest in the industry on our custom cones with an MOQ of 10,000 cones. Another important aspect to understand is that the MOQ is typically for your total quantity. You're able to split the MOQ into multiple designs, however a split design fee may apply.

Lead Times

Lead time is important in order to know how much to order and when you need to reorder. Excessively long lead times means you have to carry more inventory, this costs you money. A reasonable lead time for custom pre-rolled cones is between 4-8 weeks.

We offer the shortest lead times in the industry. At Custom Cones USA we turnaround your custom cone order in 4 weeks or less, while other cone producers offer 8-12 week turnaround. They simply can't complete custom orders as quickly, because they are optimized to produce generic cones. We focus solely on branded cone production and so we can offer lead times our competitors can't.

Air-Freight vs. Ocean-Freight

When having your branded pre-rolled cones shipped, you typically have two options; Air-shipping and Ocean-shipping. Air-shipping is faster at 1-2 weeks, but is consistently more expensive. Ocean-shipping is slower with times closer to 3-4 weeks, but it is generally cheaper.

Custom Cones USA offers both air-freight and ocean-freight on our custom branded cones. Some of our customers purchase consistently large orders and choose ocean freight to lower their cost per cone. Other customers prefer to hold less inventory and end up purchasing more frequently and choosing air freight for the faster delivery. The choice depends on your business' situation, and we are more than happy to recommend an appropriate shipping solution for your business model.
